Primer water. Facial mist. Setting sprays. Over the past year, year and a half, I’ve gotten more into beauty and makeup, and the hitherto unknown Land of Crap You Can Put on Your Face. The older I get the more my skin dries out. My face is like the Gobi. Through a mixture of sorcery and prayer it’s under control, but I’m always on the lookout for ways to keep my skin hydrated. When I first heard of Smashbox Primer Water
, I got very excited, until I saw that it’s $32. For 3.9 ounces. (Insert crying emoji here.) But I liked the idea of spraying something on mah face to add extra hydration before actually applying makeup. Then I had a thought. A primer water dupe kind of thought.
This is the toner I use, Thayer’s Unscented Witch Hazel
. Fragrance and alcohol-free, it’s really great for dry, sensitive skin. I use this every damn day, sometimes twice. After cleansing, it adds moisture before I apply my actual moisturizer. The ingredients in this are non-frightening, and it contains glycerine. (Makeup sticks to glycerine really well.)
I bought a little spray bottle so I could spritz it on my face…
…and holy crap, I was right. While I always moisturize and use a primer
before applying makeup, sometimes it’s not enough, and my skin still feels a little dry. Spraying this on takes care of it. Plus, certain foundations don’t apply as smoothly as I would like, and this solves that problem as well. Spraying it either on my face or on my foundation brush, then applying the foundation, both sheers out the coverage and makes it glide on smoothly.
This Revlon Colorstay is a fantastic full-coverage foundation, but my skin is so dry that it tends to settle into lines. With the toner, it glides right over without settling in.
The best part, of course, is that it currently costs $9.50 for a 12 ounce bottle on Amazon. I know a lot of stores sell it, but I can’t find it in my area, so Amazon it is.
I’ve also used the toner as a setting spray. When I apply too much powder, a few sprays of it knocks the powder down and leaves a nice, dewy finish.
And that is my makeup tip of the day.
Go forth and hydrate.
