It’s been a goal of mine for years to get pictures of a pileated woodpecker. They’re huge. Large and in charge. Plus, their call is so bizarre sounding that I’ve been calling it The Call of the Wild Monkey Bird for years, not knowing it was a woodpecker making the sound. (Click on the link, click on the Sound tab, and it’s the third one down. Weird.)

Since I’ve been angling for pictures for years, my camera chose this day to be an absolute prick. It didn’t want to focus on the bird at all through the snow, and then when it did…it didn’t do well. So these are horrible pictures.

So now I have to get pictures of a pileated woodpecker all over again. Good ones this time.

Have a good weekend!

  1. You've captured the elusive pileated woodpecker! It's been awhile since I've seen any around here, but would love to see one again.

  2. I have suet hanging from a tree in my backyard and it brings all kinds of woodpeckers, including these. There were two of them there yesterday morning. The problem with woodpeckers is they don't stay still!
